JoyceDeWitt started performing on stage at the age of 13. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree at Ball State University. In the summer of her stock production, she was convinced by the director to enroll at UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was granted the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While at UCLA she was employed as a secretary until her TV debut in the show's episode Baretta.Contrary to rumors that she was mentored by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has claimed that the two have did not meet. DeWitt's character as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-84 series is among her most famous. She was selected for the pilot of the show and was offered the role. She also played Janet in an episode from 1979 on the spinoff series The Ropers. DeWitt was the final actor to be featured in the finale of Three's Company's 1984 season. Then, she appeared in an episode on Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. After that she ceased acting for several years. In June of 1991 she returned to acting when she played a part in Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Then she was a part of the TV comedy Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured an actress who was modelled after her voice. She was voiced by an actress in 1997. She made an appearance on an episode of Cybill as well as an appearance on the final episode of Living Single. Six of her television shows from the 2000s include Hope Island and The Nick at Nite Holiday Special as in addition to Call of the Wild.
