Madekwe came from a multi-cultural household. Born within South London. Her father is Nigerian Swiss while her mother was English. She was raised on a south London council estate, and went to The Brit School at age fourteen. She went to an academy called the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London where she gained a BA in acting. While attending the school was when she performed in various stage productions, such as King Henry V as Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights as Catherine Earnshaw.

Madekwe first aired in the US with The Beautiful Life. The drama program was telecast in the US on The CW for only two episodes, but it was ended. In February, she was cast 2011 in the role of Ashley Davenport on the ABC drama Revenge. Following her appearance as a regular on the first two seasons, it was announced in May 2013 that Madekwe was set to depart the series following her appearance on the pilot episode in the season's third. From 2014-2016, Madekwe starred as Tituba the television series Salem. Madekwe was married to her long-time lover, Iddo. Ashley Leggat, a twice Gemini nominated actress was born into a big family living in Hamilton, Ontario.
